Support our journey of 8,500 kilometers for the Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund and the Emma Children’s Hospital
The daughter of initiator William van de Pol has been cured of kidney cancer. An amazing fact, however also a given that his daughter and her family have a very difficult time behind them. But the intense experiences were also very special because of the wonderful care that she and her family received from the Emma Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in Amsterdam. Therefore William would like to do something in return. That’s the reason he and two good friends, Coen Hoogendijk and Evert Leideman conceived the plan to make the great, but tough ride (initially from China back to the Netherlands, but now with a final revised route) through 20 countries in Europe, with Amsterdam as the start and finish point. Fully inspired by the experience of his daughter and all her fellow sufferers. Starting a difficult journey far from home, that will carry you back to your own familiar environment, to then celebrate this accomplishment.
On Friday 24 May 2013, 4 motorcycles, 4 cars and 12 companions will depart to conquer the heavy and intense journey; passing through 20 countries, over 10 intense rally routes and travel a distance of 8,500 km. A huge undertaking which in addition to the experience, hardships, impressions and weariness, should also lead to a beautiful profit for the two charities, the Emma Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund. Literally a journey4life that, after 17 intense days, will end in the Emma Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam on Sunday 9 June.

William van de Pol receives the devastating news that his daughter suffers from kidney cancer, also known as the Wilms tumor. In a blow everything that was perfectly normal and safe was completely turned upside down and he enters a whirlwind of almost unbearable uncertainty and radical treatment of his beloved daughter.
In the Wilhelmina Hospital in Utrecht, the diagnosis was confirmed and the next day she is already admitted to the oncology department in the Emma Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam. A few days later the first chemotherapy was administered and the Ronald McDonald House suddenly became the “home” of William.
At a later stage, a major operation follows that almost killed her. The strain, the hope, the uncertainty of where all this will lead, the many impressions that are impossible to be processed at the time and of course the battle of your own child ……
Now, 10 years later, she is doing very well. She is declared healthy, but she is still under control of the doctors in the Emma Children’s Hospital.
At a New Year’s reception old classmates William and Coen Hoogendijk meet again. Coen tells him about his upcoming trip with Evert Leideman to travel by motorcycle though Peru. William tells him about his dream to undertake such a journey for charity. Both Coen and Evert lost several people in their immediate circle to cancer and without a moment of doubt it was decided to make this dream come true.
The outline of the plan is born: “In 2013 we’ll drive an intense rally route through 20 countries in Europe so we’ll provide a lot of publicity and sponsors in order to raise money for the Emma Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund.”.
We will travel with a group of 12 people and 4 cars and 4 off-road motorcycles from Amsterdam through 20 countries back to the Emma Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam. An arduous journey of 8,500 km with the motto:
“ RONALD2EMMA – JOURNEY4LIFE ”
By doing this we symbolize the sudden transition of any child in this situation. Sacrificing the familiar environment (home) for a completely unknown territory (our departure from the Netherlands), the uncertainty that awaits you (where will the journey take us), the struggle to get well (bridge 8,500 km though rough territory, 20 countries, in 17 days), and finally return home healthy.
Ronald2Emma; the trip that supports life, the journey4life!
We hope we can count on your support, in any form whatsoever.
When you’re ill as a child, you want your parents to be as close to you as possible. And when you have a disability, you want to be able to do as many things the same as your peers. The Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund understands this all too well. Therefore, for already 25 years, the Ronald McDonald House provides a helping hand to sick or disabled children and their families.
Families stay in Ronald McDonald Houses to be able to be as close as possible to their sick child in hospital or rehabilitation center. The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are safe, comfortable, homely places in or close to the institution, so that families of sick or disabled children are able to enjoy some privacy. Some Rooms are enriched with game options, so children can forget for a little while that they are ill and play with each other and their brothers and sisters. Thanks to Ronald McDonald Holidays and Ronald McDonald Sport, sick or disabled children and their families are able to enjoy unlimited holidays or sports together. Everyone plays along!
The Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund (Ronald McDonald Kinderfonds) is the coordinating organization of the Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Homes, Holidays and Sports. The Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund (Ronald McDonald Kinderfonds) is the Dutch department of the international Ronald McDonald House Charities.
The Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund receives no government funding and relies entirely on contributions from contributors and sponsors.
30 years ago children often passed away from diseases against which no cure existed for. They passed away even before they had the chance to start their lives. But nowadays we’re able to treat them so they get the opportunity to grow up to adults. This is extraordinary, however it does requires extra care during their childhood. Because how do you develop when you spent half of your young life in hospitals? How do you teach yourself to maintain, how do you learn to deal with situations like healthy children do?
In our Emma Children’s Hospital AMC, we did extensive research and created a plan for this: the Metamorphosis.
Part of the Metamorphosis is the complete renovation of the Emma. The Children’s Hospital will be reconstructed in such a way that children feel at home and are able to develop, as much as possible, in the same way as children that grow up without an illness.
Since 2010 the new Infants Department is in use, consisting of several rooms where parents can stay over with their infants in a comfortable environment. Each room has the atmosphere of a living room. There is a sleeping sofa, a special nursing chair, a private shower and toilet. Additionally, each room had access to internet and a webcam, also called Big Mother Watching. This offers parents the opportunity to watch their baby in the hospital via their computer at home.
The other departments: Intensive Care Children, Pediatric Surgery, Teens, Big Kids, Children Oncology and Neonatology are now being reconstructed. We do not only aim to deliver the best care, but we also want a sick child to be able to grow up as normal as possible. Our dream is to become the best children’s hospital in the world. Please help us to finance all the extras for which the government has no budget.
